How to choose the right thermal imaging device for your needs

How to choose resolution

Resolution determines the clarity of thermal imaging images and affects the target recognition capability and distance.

  • 640×512: Professional hunting and long-distance observation
  • 384×288: mid-range resolution, balancing performance and cost
  • 256×192: Short-distance observation and entry-level use

Choice of lens focal length

The focal length of the lens affects the field of view and detection distance, and needs to be selected according to the usage scenario.

  • 50mm: long distance observation, narrow field of view
  • 35-40mm: medium distance observation, balanced field of view
  • 25mm: short distance observation, wide field of view

Thermal imaging technology parameter analysis

Thermal sensitivity (NETD)

Thermal sensitivity refers to the smallest temperature difference that a thermal imaging device can detect, measured in milliKelvin (mK). The smaller the value, the better the device's ability to resolve temperature differences.

Professional-grade equipment can usually reach below 35mK, can provide clearer thermal images in low temperature difference environments, and is suitable for use in environments with small temperature differences.

Pixel size

The pixel size is the physical size of a single pixel on a thermal imaging detector, with 12μm and 17μm being common.

Smaller pixel sizes (12μm) generally provide higher image quality and smaller optical systems, but at a higher cost. Products with 17μm pixels are more cost-effective.

Refresh rate

The refresh rate indicates the number of times a thermal imaging device updates its image per second, measured in Hertz (Hz).

A refresh rate of 50Hz can provide smooth images and is suitable for observing moving targets; a refresh rate of 25Hz is suitable for static observation and can reduce power consumption and extend battery life.

Detection distance

The detection distance refers to the maximum distance at which the device can detect a target of a certain size, usually based on the distance for detecting a 1.7m×0.5m human-shaped target.

The detection distance is affected by many factors, including resolution, lens focal length, detector performance, etc. High-end equipment can reach more than 2000 meters, and entry-level equipment is usually around 800 meters.
